Set Up a Discord Server Automatically: Setup Assistant
How to set up your Discord server with Kage's Setup Assistant: find the right modules, create channels and roles from a template, preview everything first and extend it any time.
Updated: 22 October 2026
A new server starts empty: no categories, no roles, no bot doing anything. Building that by hand takes hours. Kage's Setup Assistant takes that work off you. It asks about your server, recommends suitable modules and, if you want, creates categories, channels and roles from a template. Before anything happens you see exactly what is going to change.
In short: Open the Setup Assistant in the Kage dashboard, answer a few questions, pick modules and a template, and check the preview. The bot only writes to your server when you confirm. Whatever already exists is reused instead of being created twice.
What the assistant does
- Recommends modules: From your answers it suggests suitable modules and explains why.
- Creates the server structure: Categories, text channels, voice channels and roles are created from a template with sensible permissions.
- Sets up modules: For the modules you choose it creates matching channels and roles right away, for example for the welcome message or tickets.
- Continue later: You can stop at any time and pick up where you left off, or start over.
Kage cannot create a new Discord server. Create the server in Discord first and invite the bot.
The steps at a glance
- Start: You see what the assistant does and start it.
- Questions: The kind of server (for example gaming community, general community, team or friends), its rough size and wishes such as boosting activity, ticket support or protection against mass joins.
- Modules: The recommendation, split into "fits your plan" and "needs an upgrade". You can deselect pre-selected modules and add others. For the modules you decide whether Kage creates channels and roles with its defaults, whether you adjust the names first, or whether only the module is switched on.
- Design: Role template, full presets and the style of category and channel names.
- Server structure: Pick a template, look at the preview and adjust names, icons, roles and visibility if needed.
- Confirm: A summary shows what will be set up. Confirming starts the setup.
- Done: You see what was created and go straight to the modules.
Three ways to set up the server
In the server structure step you choose how far the assistant may go:
- Full setup: Categories, channels and roles are created from the chosen template.
- Only set up Kage: Your existing structure stays untouched; only the selected modules are switched on and configured.
- Complete the structure: The assistant first shows an inventory (categories, text and voice channels, roles) and adds only what is really missing. This is the right choice for a server that is already running.
Templates, roles and design
There are templates in several levels that build on each other. The larger templates and some modules belong to higher plans, and the assistant shows that in the preview.
For roles you can pick a role template, for example for gaming, community, business or clan, rename roles, recolor them, reorder them and add your own. For each role you choose a permission profile. The templates never grant the Administrator permission. If you want an administration area, the assistant creates the channel area and you assign the permissions yourself in Discord afterwards.
For the design there are ready-made presets and separate styles for category and channel names, for example with symbols in front. The preview shows the chosen style immediately on every channel that will be created. Extra areas such as team, moderation or administration can be added one by one, also with restricted visibility.
Safe and repeatable
- Preview before every change: You see what will be created and what already exists.
- Nothing twice: Categories, channels and roles with the same name are reused, not created a second time.
- Nothing against your will: If you delete something later, the assistant does not bring it back on its own in a later run.
- Errors one by one: If a step fails, for example because the bot is missing a permission, the assistant reports it clearly and all other steps still run.
Classic or with AI?
The setup assistant works with fixed templates. That is quick and predictable but has limits: you choose from three templates, you make adjustments step by step, and you delete what was created yourself if needed. Protection against spam bots is a separate assistant.
Kage AI Discord Setup works differently: you describe your server in your own words, the AI drafts roles, channels, visibility, modules and protection in one plan, you revise it by chat, and everything can be undone with one click. In return the AI can be wrong, so you check the preview before you confirm.
Our recommendation: If your server does not clearly fit one of the templates, use AI Setup. For a quick standard start, the classic assistant is enough.
Cost
The setup assistant is free permanently, including creating categories, channels and roles. Costs only arise with AI Setup: you can view a plan on every plan, applying is included in Enterprise and costs 5 euros per application in Basic and Premium. Which module belongs to which plan is shown in the "Matching Kage features" box further down and on the pricing overview.
Common pitfalls
- The bot needs the permissions Manage Channels and Manage Roles. Move its role as high as possible, otherwise it cannot create or assign roles. Help: Discord bot not assigning roles.
- For an existing server choose Complete the structure instead of Full setup, so nothing is created twice next to your own structure.
- The template names are suggestions. Adjust them in the preview before you confirm.
Works well with
After the setup the fine-tuning is worth it: a welcome message with a banner, automatic roles for new members and solid moderation. The post Welcoming new members gives an overview of the whole entry experience. If you later want to spot problems early, server monitoring helps.
