Discord Moderation Guide: How to Keep Your Server Safe

Spam, raids, abuse and rule-breaking: which layers of protection a Discord server needs and how to build them with Kage Bot.

Updated: 13 October 2026

A Discord server rarely breaks because of one big attack. It is usually many small things at once: floods of messages, throwaway accounts dropping ad links, abusive language, a raid at the worst possible hour, and no record the team can use to work out what happened. Good moderation is therefore built in layers that support each other.

The five layers of moderation

  1. Control access. New members should not be able to see and post everywhere on day one. That means verification, a minimum account age and a starter role with few permissions.
  2. Filter automatically. Clear-cut rule breaks should never need a human: message floods, banned terms, mass joins.
  3. Let people decide. Anything that needs judgement belongs to the team: warn, time out, kick, ban, always with a reason that can be traced later.
  4. Log everything. A mod log shows who punished whom, when and why. A server log keeps deleted and edited messages.
  5. Clean up. Channels that fill with leftovers quickly can be cleared on a schedule.

What Discord gives you out of the box

Discord ships its own safety tools: verification levels for new members, timeouts, roles and channel permissions, a native audit log for admin actions and, with AutoMod, a built-in filter for keywords and spam. The exact options you see, and what they are called, change from time to time, so check your server settings.

A bot adds what you need beyond that: a traceable case history per member, automatic penalties after repeated warnings, join-flood protection with decoy channels, and logs in the channels you choose.

The building blocks with Kage Bot

In which order should you set things up?

This order has worked well for most servers:

  1. Create a private channel for the mod team and point the mod log at it, so everything else becomes visible.
  2. Turn on Anti-Raid with a minimum account age and the honeypot, at first with the action "Log only" to spot false alarms.
  3. Switch on Anti-Spam with generous limits.
  4. Start the Word Filter with a few unmistakable terms and grow the list slowly.
  5. Define escalation rules for warnings once the team knows the commands.

What a bot does not replace

No filter understands context. Irony, in-jokes and tricks with special characters slip past a simple term filter. Automation takes routine work off the team but does not replace clear rules, visible moderators and a community that reports problems. Put your rules in a dedicated channel and explain what happens when someone breaks them.
