How to Combine XP and Economy Rewards on Discord

How XP, server currency and achievements work together, what Kage connects and what it does not, and a starter concept with a role shop and level roles.

Updated: 13 October 2026

Many servers want both: members should visibly rise for being active and have something to spend. Kage offers two separate systems for this: XP and levels for status, economy for currency. This article shows how to put them together sensibly and says honestly where there is no automatic connection.

In short: XP stay, grow and make ranks. Currency is earned and spent. Both can be tied to roles, but there is no automatic conversion of XP into currency or the other way round.

Two systems, two jobs

A member can therefore have a lot of XP and hardly any currency, or the other way round. That is intentional: the rank shows how long and how actively someone has been around, the balance shows what is currently left to spend.

What Kage connects

What Kage does not connect

  • No conversion: A level-up gives no currency, and currency gives no XP.
  • No currency reward for achievements: They only award XP.
  • No level gate in the shop: A shop item consists of a role and a price. Anyone with enough currency can buy it, whatever their level. Do not sell roles there that carry permissions only experienced members should have.

A starter concept

  1. Status through XP: Switch on Level & XP with the default values and link the ranks to roles.
  2. Milestones through achievements: Create two or three achievements, for example for 1000 messages or a certain level, with a small XP reward.
  3. Spending through economy: Switch on Economy, keep Daily and Work at the default values and create a few cosmetic shop roles, for example colour roles or titles. Think in days: if a role costs seven to fourteen daily rewards, it stays an attainable goal.
  4. A bridge through role panels: Release special selectable roles only from a minimum level. Whoever wants them has to be active, without currency being involved.
  5. Reward events: For an event win, award XP with /rank-xp event and currency with /economy admin-give. Both appear in the respective history.

Pitfalls

  • Double rewards for the same action: If messages bring both XP and currency, spam pays twice. The small currency reward per message is off by default. Leave it off or combine it with anti-spam.
  • Too much at once: Every additional system needs care. Start with XP and add economy only when members ask for something to spend.
  • Losing sight of the balance: After a few weeks, check how many members reach which ranks and how much currency is in circulation.

FAQ

Can I exchange XP for currency?

No. Kage has no conversion. If you want to reward both, award them separately, for example by command for an event win.

Can a level-up give currency?

Not automatically. A level-up can unlock a role and trigger a message, but it does not award currency.

Does currency apply across servers?

No. Every server has its own balances, and the currency has no real value. More in the overview Discord Economy and Rewards: Motivation for Your Community.
