Set the Verification Level: Protect Against New Accounts
The five verification levels of Discord at a glance: what they require, how to choose the right one and how to combine it with Kage verification and AutoMod.
Last checked for accuracy: 21 October 2026
The verification level decides what an account has to fulfil before it may write on your server. It keeps throwaway accounts and spam bots away.
At a glance
| Level | Requirement |
|---|---|
| None | None. Anyone may write immediately. |
| Low | A verified email address on the Discord account. |
| Medium | Additionally: the account has been registered on Discord for at least 5 minutes. |
| High | Additionally: the member has been on the server for at least 10 minutes. |
| Highest | A verified phone number on the Discord account. |
Where do I set it?
Open the Server Settings, then Safety Setup (called "Moderation" in some versions) and choose the Verification Level. You need the Manage Server permission.
Which level fits?
- Small, private servers: Low is enough.
- Open community with invite links on the web: Medium or High.
- Server at risk of raids: Highest, together with further protection.
Higher levels protect better but are more annoying for new real members. Start low and raise it when there are problems.
Frequently asked questions
Does the level also apply to members with a role? According to Discord, members with at least one role are exempt from the verification level. That is why many servers assign a role after the rules are confirmed.
Can I change the level at any time? Yes. The new level applies immediately to new messages.
With Kage
Kage adds its own verification to Discord: new members confirm the rules before they get access. Anti-raid protects against mass joins. The guide Set up verification explains both.
