Bot Offline or Not Responding: What Helps
Checklist when a Discord bot is offline or commands do not work: status, permissions, role position, command permissions in integrations and channel rules.
Last checked for accuracy: 21 October 2026
If a bot does not react, it is rarely the bot itself. Usually permissions are missing or a channel blocks it. Go through this list in order.
At a glance
| Symptom | Most common cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Bot shows offline in the list | Outage at the provider or the bot was removed | Provider's status page, member list |
| Commands do not appear | The bot lacks permission for commands or commands are restricted | Server Settings, Integrations |
| Bot does not answer in a channel | Channel permissions block it | Channel permissions of the bot role |
| Bot cannot assign roles | Bot role is too low | Role order |
| Bot does not post a message | Send Messages or Embed Links is missing | Permissions in the channel |
Checklist
- Is the bot still on the server? Check the member list. If it was removed, add it again.
- Is it online? An offline display usually means a problem at the provider. Check its status page or support server.
- Can it see and write in the channel? It needs View Channel and Send Messages, also in private channels.
- May everyone use the command? Under Server Settings, Integrations you can restrict commands per role or channel. Check the bot there.
- Is its role in the right place? The bot can only assign roles below its own role.
- Is the module switched on? Many bots have settings in a dashboard that must be activated first.
Frequently asked questions
The bot is online but its commands are missing. What now? Check under Server Settings, Integrations whether the commands are allowed for your role or this channel. Then reload Discord once.
Do I have to add the bot again? Only if it was removed. If it lacks permissions, fix them in the bot's role without adding it again.
When to ask the provider
If everything is right and the bot still does not react, contact the bot provider's support. Have a screenshot of the error message, the name of the command and the server ID ready.
