Role Order, Colors and Display in the Member List

Role order decides who may manage whom and which color a name has. It is the most common cause of "role cannot be assigned".

How the order works

• A person with several roles has all permissions combined. If a higher role does not explicitly give a permission, the permission of a lower one remains.
• Managing: Whoever has Manage Roles may only assign or change roles below their highest role. This also applies to bots: their role must be above the role they are meant to assign.
• Name color: The top role that has a color decides.

Show roles separately

Turn on Display role members separately from online members in the role settings. The members then appear in the right-hand list under their own heading, for example "Moderators". This helps to find contacts quickly. A member appears under their highest role that is displayed separately.

Typical problem: The bot cannot assign the role

If the bot's role is below the target role, assigning fails. Drag the bot role up in the list, but below the admins' roles. Details for Kage are in Which permissions does Kage need?.
