Set Up Discord AutoMod: Bad Words, Spam and Mentions

AutoMod is Discord's built-in moderation help. It recognizes messages by rules and steps in automatically.

At a glance

Set up

1. Open Server Settings, then AutoMod.
2. Choose a rule type, for example Block Custom Words.
3. Enter the terms. Wildcards with * catch parts of words.
4. Set the actions, for example block the message and send an alert to a moderation channel.
5. Add exemptions so moderators are not filtered.
6. Save the rule.

Tips

• Create a private channel for alerts so the team sees what was blocked.
• Check after a week whether the rules are too strict or too loose.
• A word list that is too long causes false hits. Start with the most important terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exempt moderators? Yes. Add their role to the rule as an exemption. Single channels can be exempted too.

Why is a harmless word blocked? Usually a wildcard with * is too broad. Make the term narrower and test it with a message.
