Create a category and a channel
- Right-click in the channel list, then Create Category. Give it a name such as "General" or "Gaming area".
- Click the + next to the category and choose the channel type.
- Give it a name. Lowercase and hyphens are usual; spaces become hyphens.
- If needed turn on Private Channel and choose who may see it.
Keep things tidy
- Keep categories small and labeled: "Questions" rather than "Misc".
- Put the most important channels on top: rules, announcements, general.
- Permissions you set on a category apply to all channels inside as long as they are synced (see Understanding Discord permissions).
Frequently asked questions
How many channels may a server have? Discord limits the number of channels per server. That is plenty for normal servers, but aim for clarity rather than quantity.
Can I move channels? Yes, by drag and drop, also into another category.
