Which Permissions Does Kage Need on Your Server?
Which Discord permissions Kage requests and what for, why Kage does not need Administrator, how role order matters and what to do when permissions are missing.
Last checked for accuracy: 21 October 2026
Kage can only do what Discord gives it permission to do. When you invite it, Discord asks which permissions you grant. This page lists what Kage requests, what it is for and what to check when something goes wrong.
At a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does Kage need Administrator? | No. Kage does not request the Administrator permission. |
| Where do I change the permissions? | In Discord: server settings, Roles, the role Kage. Channel permissions in the channel settings. |
| Kage cannot assign a role | Kage's role is too far down in the role list. |
| Kage cannot send in a channel | In that channel Kage lacks View Channel or Send Messages. |
| How do I find out what is missing? | Monitoring reports missing permissions. |
The requested permissions and what they are for
| Permission in Discord | What Kage needs it for, among other things |
|---|---|
| View Channel, Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files | Welcome messages, announcements, embeds, tickets and every message in a channel |
| Read Message History, Add Reactions, Use External Emojis | Reaction roles, polls, giveaways, starboard |
| Send Messages in Threads | Modules that reply in threads |
| Manage Messages | Word filter, spam protection and automatic clean-up |
| Manage Channels | Tickets, temporary voice channels and the channel creation of the Setup Assistant |
| Manage Roles | Auto roles, reaction roles, role panels, temporary roles |
| Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout Members | Moderation and protection features |
| Move Members | Temporary voice channels |
| Manage Nicknames | Features that change members' display names |
You do not have to keep all of them: if you do not need a module, you can withdraw the matching permission later in Discord. Monitoring will then report that the module no longer works.
Why not Administrator?
The Administrator permission bypasses every permission check in Discord. Kage deliberately does not get it, so your server stays protected if a role is set up wrongly. The Setup Assistant also never gives the Administrator permission to roles it creates.
Role order
In Discord a role can only manage roles that are below it. If Kage is to assign a role, for example as an auto role, the role Kage must be above that role in the role list. Drag it up under Roles in the server settings. In addition, Kage cannot create new roles with more permissions than Kage itself has.
Channel permissions
Even if Kage has a permission server-wide, a single channel can block it. If a channel is private or has its own rules, check there that the role Kage (or Kage itself) is allowed View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links. More in Understanding Discord permissions.
When a module does not work
- Check that the module is turned on and saved.
- Check that the chosen channel and role still exist.
- Check Kage's permissions in the channel and the position of the role Kage.
- Open Monitoring: it usually names the problem.
