Setup Assistant: Recommend Modules and Set Up Your Server
How Kage's setup assistant recommends modules, creates categories, channels and roles from a template, that it is free, how it runs repeatedly and safely and when AI Setup fits better, with steps, modes and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 22 October 2026
The setup assistant takes the start on a new server off your hands. It asks about your server, recommends suitable modules, sets up selected modules and, if you want, creates categories, channels and roles from a template. Beforehand you see exactly what will happen. The recommendations follow fixed rules, not an AI.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setup assistant.
Requirements
- Manage Server permission: You operate the assistant with the full Manage Server permission. A person who was only invited for individual modules may not use it.
- The server already exists. Kage cannot create a new Discord server. Create it yourself and invite the bot.
- Kage's permissions: Manage Channels and Manage Roles. Put Kage's role as high as possible, otherwise it cannot create or assign roles.
The steps
- Start: You see what the assistant does. If a setup has been started, it offers Continue or Start over.
- Questions: Type of server (for example gaming community, general community, team or circle of friends), approximate size and wishes such as boosting activity, support through tickets or protection against mass joins.
- Modules: The recommendation with reasons, split into "fits your plan" and "needs an upgrade". You can deselect preselected modules and add more.
- Design: Role template, complete presets and style of category and channel names.
- Server structure: Choose a template, view the preview, adjust if needed.
- Confirm: A summary shows what will be set up. Confirming starts the setup.
- Done: You see what was created.
You can cancel at any time and continue at the same place or start over. Until you confirm, Kage writes nothing to your server.
Having modules set up
For the selected modules, the assistant can create the necessary channels and roles right along and enter them in the module settings. This works for Welcome, Goodbye, Moderation, Monitoring, Audit log, Verification, Tickets, Autorole, Boost, Starboard and Suggestions. You choose:
| Choice | Effect |
|---|---|
| Kage default | Kage creates channels and roles with default names |
| Adjust names | You decide the names yourself |
| Only switch on | The module is switched on, you set up channels and roles yourself |
The channels get sensible visibility: internal channels, for example for moderation or monitoring, can only be seen by administrators and, if present, the matching team role. Roles the assistant creates never get the Administrator permission.
Modules your plan does not cover are not switched on by the assistant but marked with an upgrade notice. The other modules continue.
Three ways to set up the server structure
| Way | Effect |
|---|---|
| Set up completely | Categories, channels and roles are created from the template |
| Set up Kage only | Your existing structure stays untouched, only the selected modules are switched on |
| Complete the server structure | First shows an inventory (categories, text and voice channels, roles) and only adds what is missing. The right way for a running server. |
Templates, roles and design
There are templates in three tiers that build on each other: Basic, Premium and Enterprise. The larger templates belong to higher plans, which the preview shows. If you choose a template your plan does not cover, Kage rejects it before anything is written. During Early Access all templates and areas are unlocked and the checkboxes in the preview can be used. If you switch the template after you have already adjusted things (names, symbols, roles, deselected entries), Kage warns you because the switch resets those changes. You have to confirm it.
- Roles: You choose a role template (Gaming, Community, Business or Clan), can rename, colour, sort and remove roles and add your own. For each role you choose a permission profile, with "Custom" individual permissions. The Administrator permission never exists there.
- Design: Ready-made presets (Gaming, Cyber, Samurai, Elegant, MMO, Minimal) and separate styles for category and channel names, for example with symbols in front. You can adjust names and symbols individually. The preview shows the style immediately and stays in place while you change things (it doesn't jump to the top); a short "Changed" note confirms the update. You pick the symbol in a window with all standard emojis by category ("Show more" reveals the whole category). Custom server emojis aren't possible here: Discord only allows standard emojis in channel and category names.
- Additional areas: Team, Moderation and Administration can be added individually, also with restricted visibility. For the Administration area Kage only creates the channels. You assign the permissions for it yourself afterwards in Discord.
Safe and repeatable
- Preview before every change: You see what is created new and what is already there.
- Nothing twice: Kage takes over categories, channels and roles with the same name instead of creating them a second time. A text channel and a voice channel with the same name count separately.
- Nothing against your will: What you delete yourself later is not created again by Kage on a repeat run.
- Errors individually: If a step fails, for example because Kage lacks a permission, the assistant reports it clearly and the remaining steps continue.
Classic or with AI?
The classic assistant and Kage AI Discord Setup both build your server. They differ in how closely the result adapts to you.
| Classic setup assistant | Kage AI Setup | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | three fixed templates (Basic, Premium, Enterprise) | your description in your own words |
| Adjusting | choices step by step | revise by chat, for example "Add an area for streamers" |
| Protection against spam bots | separate assistant | part of the plan |
| Undo | no, you delete what was created yourself | yes, with one click |
| Cost | free | viewing the plan is free, applying is included in Enterprise and costs 5 euros per application in Basic and Premium |
| Reliability | fixed rules, always the same result | the AI can be wrong, you check the preview |
Our recommendation: If your server does not clearly fit one of the templates, or you want to set up modules, settings and protection in one go, use AI Setup. For a quick standard start without extra cost, the classic assistant is enough.
Cost
The classic setup assistant is free permanently: questions, module recommendation, preview, switching modules on and even creating the server structure cost nothing. Costs only arise with Kage AI Discord Setup, and there only when you apply a plan.
Settings at a glance
The assistant has no permanent settings. Kage stores your choices for the running setup so that you can continue later.
Checking the result
- Start: In the dashboard, open the Setup assistant and answer the questions.
- Check the preview: In the preview, existing items say "already exists", new ones "will be created".
- Confirm: Check in Discord whether categories, channels and roles are there as shown.
- Second run: Start the setup again. Kage creates nothing twice.
Troubleshooting
The role could not be created
Kage lacks Manage Roles, or a role with permissions Kage does not have itself cannot be created. Discord only allows permissions the bot owns. The assistant reports this clearly, the other roles are still created.
Everything was created twice
You chose Set up completely for a running server. Use Complete the server structure.
A module was not switched on
It belongs to a higher plan. The preview showed an upgrade notice.
Do I have to pay for the setup assistant?
No. The classic assistant is free, including creating the server structure. You only pay if you want to apply a plan of Kage AI Discord Setup on Basic or Premium.
I want something deleted back
The assistant deliberately does not recreate anything you deleted. Restore it by hand, or start the setup over.
