AI Characters: Let Your Own Personas Reply in Chat
How Kage's AI characters work: personas with their own personality reply in assigned channels or when mentioned, with cooldown, daily budget, limits and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
With AI characters you create your own figures, for example a friendly server companion. A character has a name, an avatar and a personality (system prompt). It replies to every message in an assigned channel or, if there is exactly one character, to a mention of Kage.
What applies to all AI features (switch, daily budget, data privacy) is in AI features.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- AI features active under AI Controls, and an AI provider set up by the operator.
- Kage's permissions in the channel: View Channel, Read Message History, Send Messages and Embed Links.
- Plan: The AI features are an add-on product, the plan notice at the top shows the status.
Creating a character
Under AI characters, click + Add character and fill in:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Name | Shown as the sender in the reply |
| Avatar URL (optional) | Image next to the name |
| Personality / system prompt | Describes how the character speaks and what it does, for example "You are Aria, a friendly and curious AI companion of this server. Answer briefly and casually." |
| Cooldown per member (seconds) | Minimum gap between two replies to the same member. Default 10. |
| Assigned channels | Channels in which the character replies to every message |
Turn on AI characters active and save. At least one character is needed. A character without a name or without a personality is rejected.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Characters per server | 10 |
| Channels per character | any number, but each channel belongs to only one character |
When a character replies
- In an assigned channel, the character replies to every message from a member without anyone having to mention it.
- Outside of that, it only replies if Kage is mentioned and exactly one character exists. If there are several characters without a clear channel, Kage deliberately stays silent instead of guessing which one is meant.
- Kage ignores messages from bots and empty messages.
- If the member has not waited out the cooldown, the character does not reply.
- If the daily budget is used up or the AI is unreachable, the character stays silent without any message.
The reply comes as a reply to the message with the character's name and avatar in a card, without mentioning the member. A message is shortened to 2000 characters before it goes to the AI, the reply is at most 3900 characters long.
Kage remembers no conversation history. Each message is answered on its own, so the character does not remember earlier messages. That keeps the cost per reply constant.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| AI characters active | Turns the feature on | off |
| Characters | Name, avatar, personality, cooldown, channels | empty |
Each reply appears in the module's Logs tab.
Tips
- Also describe in the personality which language the character should answer in. There is no fixed language for characters.
- Give the character a channel of its own so that it does not join every conversation.
- Raise the cooldown if a channel is very active. Each reply uses one call of the daily budget.
Checking the result
- Create: Create a character with a name, a personality and a test channel.
- Write: Write a message in the test channel. The character replies as a card with its name.
- Cooldown: Write another message right away. Within the cooldown it does not reply.
Troubleshooting
The character does not reply
Check: Are the main switch and AI characters active on? Does the character have a name and a personality? Is the channel assigned, or is there exactly one character and Kage was mentioned? Is the daily budget not yet used up? May Kage write in the channel?
"A channel may only belong to one character"
You assigned the same channel to two characters. Remove it from one of them.
With several characters none reacts to a mention
That is intended. Assign each character a channel of its own.
The character replies too often
Raise the cooldown, or assign the character to less active channels.
