Role Panels: Choose Roles Yourself with Buttons or a Dropdown
How Kage's Role Panels offer self-service roles via buttons or a dropdown: creating and posting a panel, single choice, maximum, temporary roles, level requirement and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
Role Panels are the modern self-service system for roles: you post a message with buttons or a dropdown, and members choose their roles with it. Unlike reaction roles, there is a single-choice group, a maximum of simultaneous roles, temporary roles and a level requirement per role.
Role Panels are also the role selection in onboarding. For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up Role Panels.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module). The
/rolepanelcommands require the same permission. - Roles in Discord: Create the roles that members should choose.
- Role order: Kage's role must be above these roles in the role list. Kage also needs Manage Roles (part of the standard invite).
- In the panel channel: Kage needs Send Messages and Embed Links.
- For level requirements: The level system should be on (Ranks, levels and rewards).
Creating a panel
In the dashboard under Role Panels, you click + Add panel and fill it in:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Title | Heading of the panel message |
| Channel | Channel where the panel appears |
| Description (optional) | Text above the role list |
| Display | *Buttons* or *Dropdown* |
| Only one role at a time | Single-choice group |
| Max roles | Maximum number of simultaneously chosen roles (1 to 25) |
| Role options | up to 25 entries: role, label, emoji, temp. hrs, min level |
Then you proceed in two steps:
- Save stores the configuration. For that, a panel needs a channel and at least one role option.
- Post panel posts the message in the channel. Later, Update panel updates the same message instead of posting a new one. If it was deleted, Kage posts it again.
The message shows title, description and the role list with emoji. Behind a role it shows, if set, "from level N" and the duration in hours. A note in the footer names "single choice" or the maximum.
You can also manage the panels with commands (see below). The number of panels depends on the plan: Premium allows up to 15 panels, Enterprise up to 50. Existing panels above the limit are not trimmed; only further growth is blocked.
How a panel works
Buttons
- A click on a button toggles the role: if the member does not have it, they get it; if they have it, they lose it.
- With single choice, Kage removes the member's other panel roles when granting.
- If a maximum is set (without single choice) and reached, Kage refuses further roles and names the maximum.
- If the option has a level requirement and the member does not meet it, a message says which level is needed.
Dropdown
- The member chooses one or more roles. Kage reconciles the selection with the member's current roles: newly chosen roles are granted, deselected ones removed.
- With single choice only one selection is possible; otherwise at most as many as the maximum or the options allow.
- A role for which the level is missing is skipped here without its own message; you can recognize it by the "from level N" note in the list.
Temporary roles
If an option has temp. hrs, the role applies for only that many hours (1 to 8,760) and is then removed automatically. The time limit uses the same mechanism as Temporary roles. If the member removes the role themselves earlier, Kage deletes the time limit.
Replies
Kage replies only to the member (ephemeral): "➕" with the new roles and "➖" with the removed ones. If nothing changes, it says so. If Kage lacks the permission for a role, the member gets a corresponding message. Every change appears in the Logs tab.
The buttons and the dropdown also keep working after a bot restart. If the module is switched off or the panel is no longer in the configuration, Kage reports that the panel is no longer active.
Commands
The /rolepanel group can only be used with Manage Server. Only you see all replies.
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
/rolepanel create | Creates a panel and posts it in a channel (title, display buttons or dropdown). Turns the module on. |
/rolepanel add-option | Adds a role: role, label, emoji, hours (1 to 8,760), minimum level (1 to 1,000). |
/rolepanel remove-option | Removes a role from the panel. |
/rolepanel settings | Sets single choice and maximum (0 to 25, 0 = unlimited). |
/rolepanel delete | Deletes a panel. |
/rolepanel list | Lists the panels with their ID. |
With the command variant, at most 20 panels are possible.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Role Panels enabled | Turns all panels on together | off |
| Panel fields | see table above | – |
| Post / update panel | Posts or updates the message | – |
Checking the result
- Panel: Check that the message is in the channel and shows the buttons or the dropdown.
- Test account: Click a role. You get "➕" with the role; a second click removes it.
- Single choice and maximum: Check that the other roles are removed or that the limit applies.
- Logs tab: Every change is noted there.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens on click, or the role does not arrive
Usually it is the role order: Kage's role must be above the role, and Kage needs Manage Roles. The member then sees a message that Kage may not assign the role. Also check that the role still exists in Discord.
"Panel is not active"
"Role Panels enabled" is off, or the panel was removed from the configuration. Turn the module on and post the panel again.
The panel cannot be posted
First choose a channel and at least one role option, save, and then post. Check Kage's permissions in the channel.
A role is not granted although it was chosen
With the dropdown, the required level may be missing, or the maximum is reached. With buttons, a message appears for this.
A temporary role stays
Kage could not remove it on expiry (role order or permission). See Temporary roles.
