Server Rules: /rules, Embed Post and Rules by DM on Join
How Kage shows your server rules: the /rules command, a one-off embed post in a channel and delivery by DM to new members – with settings and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
With the rules module you store your server's rules in one place. Kage shows them in three ways: through the /rules command (German /regeln), as a one-off embed post in a channel, and optionally as a direct message to every new member. The rules are purely informational. If someone should confirm them before getting access, use verification.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up server rules.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- For the embed post: Kage needs Send Messages and Embed Links in the target channel.
- For the DM: The new member must allow direct messages from server members.
The three ways
The /rules command
Any member can run /rules. Kage replies with an embed that is visible to everyone in the channel. If the module is off or the rules text is empty, Kage tells only you that no rules have been set yet.
Embed post in a channel
In the dashboard under Post as embed, you choose a channel and click Post now. Kage posts the rules once as an embed, for example in a #rules channel. The post does not update by itself: if you change the text later, you post again and delete the old post by hand.
If you want more design (fields, images, buttons), use Edit as a full embed in the embed builder to take title, text and color over as a new template in the embed module.
Rules by DM on join
With Send rules by DM to new members, Kage sends every new member a direct message with the rules on joining. This happens independently of the command. It is deliberately a DM instead of a channel post: that way a channel is not spammed on busy servers, and exactly the person who should read the rules right now is reached. If the member has blocked direct messages, Kage skips delivery and says nothing. Successful delivery appears in the Logs tab.
The DM comes after the welcome message, auto roles, verification and onboarding in the join order. It is not a confirmation and blocks nothing.
The structure
| Part | Description |
|---|---|
| Title | Heading of the embed, default "Server-Regeln" |
| Rules text | Your text. Discord markdown is supported, for example **bold** and - bullet list. |
| Embed color | Color of the border, default Discord blue |
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| /rules active | Turns the module on | off |
| Title | Heading of the embed | Server-Regeln |
| Rules text | Content of the rules | empty |
| Embed color | Color of the border | blue |
| Send rules by DM to new members | DM on join | off |
| Post as embed | One-off post in a channel | – |
The /rules command is the module's only slash command. Everything else is maintained in the dashboard.
Checking the result
- Command: Run
/rules. The embed with your text appears. - Embed post: Choose a channel, click Post now and check the result in the channel.
- DM: Join with a second account that allows direct messages, and check the inbox.
- Log: The Logs tab shows rules that were sent.
Troubleshooting
/rules says there are no rules
The module is off, or the rules text is empty or consists only of spaces. Activate it, enter text and save.
The DM does not arrive
The option "Send rules by DM to new members" is off, the rules text is empty, or the member does not allow direct messages from server members. Kage then silently skips delivery.
The embed post cannot be sent
Choose a channel first. Also check whether Kage may Send Messages and Embed Links there.
The formatting is wrong
Use Discord markdown. The text of an embed may be at most 4,096 characters long on Discord. If your rules are longer, split them across several posts or design them in the embed builder.
