Custom Commands: Retrieve Text Replies with /command
How Kage's custom commands work: create text replies in the dashboard and retrieve them with /command, naming rules, length limit, plan limit, behavior and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
With custom commands you store text replies that members retrieve by slash command, for example "serverinfo", "rules-short" or "discord-link". You maintain everything in the dashboard, without programming.
Technically there is a single command /command (German /befehl) with a name field. Kage does not register a slash command of its own in Discord for each entry. While typing, Discord suggests the existing names.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up custom commands.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- At least one command: To activate it, at least one command must be set up.
- Usage: Any member may use
/command. Kage needs Send Messages in the respective channel.
How a call works
- The member types
/commandand chooses or writes a name. Discord shows up to 25 matching names as suggestions. - If the module is off or there are no commands, Kage tells only the member that there are no custom commands here.
- Kage looks up the name ignoring upper and lower case. If it does not find it, it reports that only to the member.
- Otherwise Kage posts the stored reply text publicly in the channel where the command was called.
- Every call appears in the module's Logs tab.
Creating a command
In the dashboard under Custom commands, you click + Add command and enter a name and the reply text.
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | lowercase letters, numbers, - and _ only, at most 32 characters |
| Reply | at most 1,900 characters |
| Unique | Each name may appear only once |
| Count | Depends on the plan: Basic up to 15 commands, Premium and Enterprise unlimited |
The reply text supports Discord markdown, for example **bold** and bullet lists. Existing commands above the limit are not trimmed; only further growth is blocked. The dashboard refuses to save and names the error if a rule is violated.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| /command active | Turns the module on | off |
| Command: name | Key for the call | – |
| Command: reply | The text Kage posts | – |
Checking the result
- Create: Create a command "test" with a short text and save.
- Call: Type
/commandand choose "test". The text appears in the channel. - Logs tab: The call is noted there.
Troubleshooting
/command does not find my entry
Check that the module is active and the entry is saved. Check the spelling of the name. Upper and lower case do not matter when calling, typos do.
The dashboard refuses to save
Usually a name contains an invalid character (capitals, spaces, umlauts), a name appears twice, a reply is empty or longer than 1,900 characters, or the plan limit is reached.
The names do not appear as suggestions
Discord shows at most 25 suggestions. Type a few letters to narrow the list.
The reply is too long for Discord
Messages on Discord are limited to 2,000 characters. Kage therefore allows at most 1,900. For longer texts, use an embed or split the text across several commands.
