AI Features: Switch, Daily Budget and Data Privacy
How Kage's AI features work in general: add-on product, central switch, shared daily budget, which data goes to an AI provider and what happens on errors.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
Kage has four AI features: AI FAQ, AI characters, AI moderation and AI summaries. All of them depend on a central switch and a shared daily budget that you set under AI Controls in the dashboard. This article explains what applies to all four. The details are in the articles on the individual features.
Add-on product
The AI features are a standalone add-on product, independent of your server's plan. You book it in the dashboard under Subscription. As long as Kage is still preparing the connection of an AI provider, it says "Coming soon" there. The plan notice at the top of this page shows the current status.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- An AI provider: Kage sends requests to an external AI provider (Anthropic or OpenAI). Kage sets that up, not you. If none is set up, all AI features stay silent, even if you have activated them.
- Add-on booked, see above.
Central switch and daily budget
Under AI Controls:
| Field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| AI features active | The main switch. If it is off, every AI feature is off, whatever its own switch says. | off |
| Shared daily budget | Maximum number of AI calls per day, all features together | 200 |
Each feature only works if both switches are on: the main switch and its own.
The daily budget counts every call to the AI provider, no matter which feature makes it. The day is a UTC day. Once the budget is used up, the features stop responding: the AI FAQ says the budget for today is used up, while characters, moderation and summaries skip silently. The next UTC day it continues. The value 0 means no limit. With an active AI provider that can lead to unlimited costs, so the dashboard warns about it. Under Today's usage you see how many calls have been used today.
Where it makes sense, Kage checks cheap conditions before every call and thereby saves calls: moderation only checks released channels, summaries skip channels without new messages, very short messages do not go to the AI at all.
Which data goes to the AI provider
Kage only sends what the respective feature needs. Kage keeps no stored chat history: each request stands on its own.
| Feature | What is sent |
|---|---|
| AI FAQ | your FAQ entries, the server name and the member's question |
| AI characters | the character's personality text and the member's single message |
| AI moderation | the text of the checked message, shortened to 500 characters |
| AI summaries | names and texts of the watched channel's messages since the last summary |
Kage does not send messages from bots. Treat these features like any service to which messages are passed on: point your members to this in your rules if you use moderation or summaries in channels.
When the AI does not answer
- No provider set up or provider unreachable: The feature stays silent. The AI FAQ reports that it cannot answer the question by AI right now.
- Budget used up: see above.
- Switched off: The main switch or the feature switch is off.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard page | Content |
|---|---|
| AI Controls | Main switch, daily budget, usage |
| AI FAQ | /ask with your own entries, see AI FAQ |

Checking the result
- Switch on: Turn on AI features active and set a daily budget.
- Use a feature: For example, set up the AI FAQ and ask a question.
- Usage: Under Today's usage the number rises by 1.
Troubleshooting
The AI never answers
Check the main switch, the feature switch and the daily budget. If everything is on, probably no AI provider is set up yet, which is up to Kage.
The AI has been silent since a certain time
The daily budget is used up. Raise it or wait for the next UTC day.
Costs should be limited
Set a daily budget greater than 0. At 0 there is no limit.
