Auto Roles: Settings, Flow and Troubleshooting
How Kage assigns roles automatically on join: settings, exact flow, role order, bots, logging and typical causes of errors.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
With auto roles, every new member gets one or more roles immediately on joining, without anyone having to do anything. Typical examples are a "Member" role or a role that unlocks access to the standard channels.
This page is the reference: settings, exact flow and causes of errors. For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up auto roles.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- Roles in Discord: Create the roles that should be assigned.
- Role order: Kage's role must be above all roles to be assigned in the role list.
- Manage Roles permission: Kage needs it. It is part of the permissions of the standard invite.
How assignment works
- A member joins the server.
- If the module is off or no role is chosen, nothing happens.
- If the member is a bot account and the option "Also assign to bot accounts" is off, nothing happens either.
- Kage looks up the chosen roles. A role that no longer exists is skipped.
- Kage assigns all roles found in one step. If even one of them cannot be assigned, for example because it is above Kage's role, the whole step fails and the member gets none of the roles.
- On success, an entry "N role(s) assigned to name" appears in the module's Logs tab (the text is in German) and the statistics count it.
Auto roles only affect new members. People who are already on the server do not get the roles retroactively. There are no slash commands for this module.
Settings at a glance
You find them in the dashboard under Auto roles.
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-role active | Switches automatic assignment on | off |
| Roles | The roles every new member receives (multiple selection) | none |
| Also assign to bot accounts (otherwise only real members) | Also gives the roles to bots that join the server | off |
The selection list does not show the @everyone role or roles managed by Discord (for example roles belonging to bots and integrations). Roles above Kage's highest role can be selected but fail on assignment. The dashboard points this out.
Interaction with other modules
- Verification: Both run on join independently. Kage can therefore assign an auto role and the Unverified role at the same time. Make sure the auto roles do not grant rights that should stay locked before verification: Verification.
- Welcome message and other join modules run one after another and do not interfere.
Checking the result
- Settings: Check that "Auto-role active" is on and the roles you want are chosen and saved.
- Practical test: Join with a second account. It should carry the chosen roles immediately.
- Log: The Logs tab in the module shows each successful assignment.
Troubleshooting
New members get no role
Check that "Auto-role active" is on and at least one role is chosen and saved. Check the role order: Kage's role must be above every chosen role. If only one role is too high, the member gets none. Discord shows no message for this, the error appears only in the operating log.
Only some members get the roles
Bots get them only with the option "Also assign to bot accounts". Members who were already on the server before setup do not get them retroactively.
A chosen role was deleted
Kage skips deleted roles and assigns the rest. Deselect the role in the dashboard and save.
The member received the role and lost it again
Another module or another bot removes the role. In Discord, check the server log to see who removed it. With auto roles alone nobody loses a role.
