Embeds: Design Messages, Keep Them Live and Count Link Clicks

How Kage's embed builder works: design templates, keep messages live, edit existing ones, link buttons with click counting, live data sources and troubleshooting.

Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026

With the embed builder, you design appealing Discord messages (embeds) with title, text, color, images, fields and link buttons. You save them as templates, send them as often as you like to any channel, optionally keep them live, and update them later without posting again.

For a short walkthrough, see the guide Embed builder.

Requirements

  • Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
  • Kage's permissions in the target channel: Send Messages and Embed Links. For pinning, Kage additionally needs the permission for it (Manage Messages).
  • For role mentions: The role must be mentionable, or Kage needs Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles.
  • Plan: The plan notice at the top of this page shows which plan the module needs.

Designing a template

Under Embeds, you create a template with + New template. The live preview shows how it looks in Discord.

AreaContent
Template nameVisible internally only. Required.
Title, descriptionAt least one of the two is required.
ColorColor of the border
AuthorName, icon URL, link URL
Thumbnail, imageAddresses of small and large images
FooterText and icon URL; optionally the timestamp when sending
Fieldsup to 25 fields with name, value and "Inline"
Buttonsup to 5 link buttons with label and address
Mention roleoptional, mentioned above the message when sending

You can save up to 30 templates.

Placeholders

In title, description, footer and fields you can use these placeholders. Kage replaces them when sending:

PlaceholderResult
{guild}Server name
{membercount}Member count
{channel}Target channel with #
{date}Date (DD.MM.YYYY)
{time}Time (HH:MM)

Unknown placeholders stay as they are.

Buttons in embeds are always links to a web address. Buttons with a function of their own (for example granting roles) do not exist here. For that, use Role Panels.

Sending, keeping live and updating

  1. Choose a target channel at the template and click Send. Kage posts the embed and names the channel.
  2. Keep live (editable): With this option, Kage remembers the sent message. Later you can bring it up to date with the template using 🔄 Refresh now, instead of posting a new one.
  3. Refresh automatically: For a message kept live, you set Auto-refresh every N minutes, at least 5 minutes. Kage then edits the message at that interval. This is mostly worthwhile with live data sources (see below).
  4. Pinning: With Pin in Discord when sending or later with 📌 Pin, Kage pins the message. If pinning fails (for example due to missing permissions), the message is still sent.

A message kept live is tied to a template and a channel. If the message or channel was deleted, refreshing fails with a notice: then send the template again.

Editing an existing message

With Load existing message, you paste the link of an existing Discord message (right-click → copy message link). Kage loads the first embed and the link buttons into the editor. This also applies to messages made by hand or by another bot. Saving then updates the same message directly. Other parts of a message, for example plain text or buttons with a function of their own, are not taken over by the editor.

For buttons, you can choose a tracked link instead of a fixed address. Kage creates a short link for it and counts every click.

  • You create tracked links at the creator, not in the Embeds module: in the dashboard under Social Alerts, on the platform page in the creator's card in the Tracked link section. There you see target, short link and click count and can copy the short link. In the embed editor you then pick it per button.
  • Only the time of each click is stored, no person, no IP address, no device.
  • If a tracked link is deleted, the button falls back to its fixed address, if it has one.

Live data sources

A template can choose a live data source. Kage then calculates additional placeholders for title, description and fields when sending and on every refresh:

Data sourcePlaceholders
Top 5 creators by clicks (30 days){creator_1_name} to {creator_5_name}, {creator_1_clicks} to {creator_5_clicks}
Top 5 games by playtime (7 days){game_1_name} to {game_5_name}, {game_1_hours} to {game_5_hours}
Server figures (7 days){messages_7d}, {active_members_7d}
Top 10 XP leaderboard{xp_1_mention} to {xp_10_mention}, {xp_1_xp}, {xp_1_level} and so on

Kage shows missing entries as "–" or 0. For the level in the XP leaderboard, this placeholder uses an approximation (100 × level²), not the level curve you have set. The exact leaderboard is provided by /leaderboard (Ranks, levels and rewards).

Checking the result

  1. Template: Create a template with title and text. The preview shows it.
  2. Send: Send it to a test channel. The embed appears.
  3. Live: Change the text, save and click 🔄 Refresh now. The same message changes.
  4. Link: Click a tracked button and check the click count.

Troubleshooting

Sending fails

Check that a target channel is chosen and Kage may Send Messages and Embed Links there. The template needs a title or description.

Refreshing does not work

The template was never sent with "Keep live", or the linked message or channel was deleted. Send it again with "Keep live".

The auto-refresh cannot be saved

The interval must be at least 5 minutes.

A button does not appear

Kage leaves out buttons without an address. At most 5 buttons per message are possible, and only link buttons.

The role ping is missing

The role is not mentionable, and Kage lacks Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles.
