Kage Music: Play Radio and Streams in a Voice Channel
How Kage Music plays radio stations and direct audio streams in a voice channel: control panel, commands, DJ role, volume, auto-leave, stream URLs and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
Kage Music plays internet radio and direct audio streams in a voice channel. You control it with commands or with a control panel made of buttons and a station picker. Kage Music deliberately plays no YouTube and no Spotify, because their terms of use do not allow it. A second, rights-cleared source is the Kage Music Library.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up a music bot.
What gets played
| Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Curated stations | Eight freely available radio streams, see below. |
| Custom stream URLs | Direct audio streams, if you allow that in the dashboard. |
The eight stations (command /music stations):
| Name to type | Display name |
|---|---|
classical | Classical (Musopen, Public Domain) |
lofi | Lofi Radio |
jazz | Smooth Jazz |
groovesalad | SomaFM Groove Salad |
dronezone | SomaFM Drone Zone |
chillhop | Chillhop |
electronic | Electronic |
ambient | Ambient Sleeping Pill |
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- Kage's permissions in the voice channel: Connect and Speak. For
/music panelalso Send Messages in the voice channel's chat. - You must be in a voice channel when you start something.
- Plan: The plan notice at the top of this page shows which plan the module needs.
Setting up
- In the dashboard, open the Kage Music module and turn on Kage Music enabled.
- Optionally choose a DJ role. Without one, any member can control playback.
- Set Maximum volume (%) and Auto-leave after (seconds).
- Under Allow custom direct stream URLs, decide whether only the curated stations or also your own streams are playable.
- Save.
- Optional: under Post a how-to into a channel, pick a text channel and click Post how-to. Kage writes an embed with the most important commands. With include a working control panel, the message contains a panel that works right away, ideal as a dedicated music channel.
Playing
With the panel:
- Join a voice channel.
- Enter
/music panel. Kage joins your channel and posts the control panel into that voice channel's chat. - Pick a station in the panel.
With a command: /music play source:lofi or with a stream URL. Kage joins your channel and plays. If something is already playing, Kage adds the new entry to the queue and tells you its position.
Kage stays in the channel with its speaker turned off, so it does not listen to you.
The control panel
| Element | Effect |
|---|---|
| Station picker | Chooses one of the eight stations. Kage joins your voice channel and starts it if nothing is playing. |
| ⏯️ | Pauses or resumes. |
| ⏭️ | Skips to the next queue entry. |
| ⏹️ | Stops, clears the queue and leaves the channel. |
| 🔉 / 🔊 | Volume in steps of 10 percent. |
| 📜 | Shows the current track and the queue. |
Important:
- Switching stations: Radio streams do not end by themselves. If you pick another station in the panel while one is playing, Kage lines it up as next. Press ⏭️ afterwards to switch immediately.
- ⏯️, ⏭️, 🔉 and 🔊 only respond to members who are in the same voice channel as Kage, or to members with Manage Server. ⏹️ only checks the permission to control.
- The most recently posted panel updates itself on every change. The buttons stay valid after Kage restarts.
Commands at a glance
| Command | Effect | Who may |
|---|---|---|
/music play source:<station or URL> | Plays or queues | Controllers |
/music panel | Posts the control panel | Controllers |
/music pause, /music resume | Pauses, resumes | Controllers |
/music skip | Next entry | Controllers |
/music stop | Stops and leaves the channel | Controllers |
/music volume percent:<0–200> | Sets the volume up to the cap | Controllers |
/music nowplaying | Shows the current track and up to 10 queue entries | everyone |
/music stations | Lists the stations | everyone |
/music dj-role role:<role> | Sets the DJ role, without a role the restriction is removed | Manage Server |
/music library-search, /music library-play | Music library, see Kage Music Library | see there |
"Controllers" are everyone if no DJ role is set, otherwise the DJ role and everyone with Manage Server. In German Discord clients the parameters are called quelle, prozent and rolle, and the command is dj-rolle.
The /music dj-role command also turns the module on if it was off.
Volume, queue and auto-leave
- Volume: Kage starts at 100 percent or, if lower, at the cap.
/music volumeand the panel buttons always stay below the Maximum volume (10 to 200 percent). - Queue: A further entry starts automatically as soon as the current one ends. Since a radio stream does not end, the next entry only gets its turn after ⏭️.
- Auto-leave: When no humans are left in the channel, Kage waits the set time and leaves if still nobody is there. Kage discards the queue when it leaves. The shortest wait is 15 seconds: even at 0, Kage waits 15 seconds. The "0 = never" hint in the dashboard is not accurate.
- New values: Kage only picks up the maximum volume and auto-leave once it has left the channel (for example after
/music stop) and joins again. The DJ role and the stream URL permission apply immediately.
One bot, one voice channel
Kage can only be in one voice channel per server at a time. If Kage is already in another channel where people are still listening, nobody can pull it away. End playback there first with /music stop. If only bots remain in the old channel, Kage simply switches. With Enterprise, up to three bots run in parallel, see Additional Kage Music bots.
Custom stream URLs
With the permission in the dashboard, Kage accepts http:// and https:// addresses that are a direct audio stream. An address counts as one if it
- ends in
.mp3,.aac,.ogg,.opus,.m4a,.flacor.wav(also with a query attached), or - contains
/stream,icecast,:8000or:8085.
Kage does not resolve web pages such as YouTube. The title in the panel and queue is the last part of the address, at most 80 characters.
If a stream drops, Kage briefly tries to reconnect. If the stream ends for good, Kage stays silent in the channel until you start something new or the auto-leave time kicks in.

Troubleshooting
"The Music module is not enabled on this server"
Turn on Kage Music enabled in the dashboard and save.
Kage does not join the channel
Check Connect and Speak for Kage in that channel. If a permission is missing, Kage names it in the reply. If "I couldn't join the voice channel" appears, also check that Kage may see the channel.
"The connection to the voice server timed out"
That is a network problem on Kage's side and not a setting of yours. Try again later or tell support.
"Unknown station and not a valid direct audio stream URL"
Check the spelling with /music stations. A URL must be a direct audio stream, and Allow custom direct stream URLs must be on.
"Kage Music is currently playing in …"
Kage is playing in another channel where people are still present. End it there with /music stop or use an additional bot.
I may not control playback
A DJ role is set. Only that role and everyone with Manage Server may control. The panel buttons additionally only work in Kage's voice channel.
I hear nothing
Check the volume: 🔉 can lower it all the way to 0. Also check whether the stream itself is online.
A new volume cap has no effect
End playback with /music stop and start again, see "New values" above.
Legal note
Playing music publicly may require a licence on your server, for example through GEMA or GVL in Germany. As the server operator, the responsibility is yours. Kage picks stations from sources that offer listening freely. This is not legal advice.
