Temporary Voice Channels: Join to Create with a Control Panel
How Kage's temporary voice channels work: set up hubs, automatically created channels, a control panel for name, limit, access and password, saved settings and troubleshooting.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
With temporary voice channels ("Join to Create"), every member gets their own voice channel as soon as they join a trigger channel. Kage creates the channel, moves the member into it, posts a control panel and deletes the channel again once it is empty. You don't need many permanent channels, and members control their channel themselves.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Temporary voice channels.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- Kage's permissions: server-wide Manage Channels and Move Members, and View Channel and Connect in the trigger channel. If Kage cannot see the target category (for example a private area), it cannot create channels there. The dashboard warns about this.
- Plan: The plan notice at the top of this page shows which plan the module needs. If the plan lapses, Kage pauses the module.
Setting up a hub
A hub is a trigger channel with its settings. You can create several hubs with their own templates.
In the dashboard under Temporary Voice Channels, choose Create hub: Kage then creates a new, permanent trigger channel in the category you picked. Alternatively, use Add existing channel as hub to take an existing voice channel.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Trigger channel | Whoever joins it gets their own channel. |
| Target category | Where the new channels appear. If left empty, the trigger channel's category. |
| Name template | Name of the new channels, default {username}'s Kanal. {username} becomes the display name. |
| Default user limit | Maximum number of participants, 0 = unlimited. |
| Bitrate (kbps) | Audio quality, optional. Kage caps it at your server's limit. |
| Also create a linked private text channel | Each channel gets a text channel that only voice participants can see. |
| Where do new channels appear? | Directly below or above the trigger channel, at the very bottom or the very top of the server. |
How it works
- A member joins the trigger channel.
- Kage creates a new voice channel from the template. It takes over the category's permissions, the member gets access to the channel, and Kage sets name, limit, bitrate and region.
- Kage moves the member into the new channel. If that fails, Kage deletes the channel again right away.
- Kage posts the control panel in the channel's voice chat. The member is the owner.
- When the last person leaves, Kage deletes the channel (and the linked text channel). Every 5 minutes Kage also cleans up empty or orphaned channels, including after a restart.
- Creating and deleting appear in the Logs tab.
The control panel
The panel belongs to the owner. Only the owner can change settings. The panel's labels are in English.
| Element | Effect |
|---|---|
| Rename | Renames the channel (up to 100 characters). |
| Limit | Sets the user limit, 0 to 99. |
| Quality | Sets the audio quality in kbps, at most your server's limit. |
| Region | Picks a voice region or "Automatic". |
| Delete | Deletes the channel after a confirmation. |
| Access selector | Open (everyone sees and joins), Closed (visible, nobody new can join), Hidden (invisible, invitation only), Password (joining requires a password). |
| Let someone in… | Allows one person to see and join. |
| Remove & block someone… | Removes a person and blocks them from this channel. Not possible for yourself or for bots. |
| Claim | Takes over ownership if the owner is no longer in the channel. Whoever does it must be in the channel. |
| Hand over | Passes ownership to a person in the channel. |
| Reset saved | Deletes your saved settings (see below). |
| Enter password | For password channels: people allowed to join enter the password here (up to 50 characters). |
When the owner leaves the channel, they stay registered and regain control when they return. While they are away, any member in the channel can take over with Claim.
Saved settings
Kage remembers each member's most recently chosen panel values: name, limit, quality, region, access mode and up to 25 allowed and 25 blocked people. On that member's next channel these values take precedence over the hub defaults. With Reset saved, the next channel starts with the default values again.
The access mode works through @everyone's permissions in the channel. With Password, everyone sees the channel, but only people with the password can join.
Managing hubs
- You change the name and category of the trigger channel in the dashboard. On save, the real Discord channel takes the new name and is moved into the chosen category. With the option On save: copy the category's permissions, Kage also copies the category's permissions onto the trigger channel, because Discord does not do that by itself through the API.
- Name template, user limit, bitrate and text channel apply to newly created channels. Temporary channels that already exist do not change.
- Removing a hub: If you had Kage create the hub with Create hub, removing it also deletes the Discord channel, and the dashboard asks first. If the hub is based on an existing channel, Kage only removes the hub and the channel stays.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary voice channels active | Turns the module on | off |
| Hubs | Trigger channel, category, name template, limit, bitrate, text channel, position | – |
Temporary voice channels have no slash commands. Everything runs through the panel in the voice chat.
Checking the result
- Hub: Create a hub and save.
- Join: Join the trigger channel with a test account. A new channel appears and you are moved into it.
- Panel: The control panel is in the channel's voice chat. Rename the channel.
- Cleanup: Leave the channel. It disappears.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when joining
Check that the module is enabled and the hub is saved, that Kage has Manage Channels and Move Members, and that it can see the category. The dashboard flags missing permissions on the module, and the monitoring reports them in Discord if you want.
The new channel appears at the very top
Kage cannot see the target category. Give the bot role View Channel and Manage Channels in the category.
The member is not moved
Kage needs Move Members. If moving fails, Kage deletes the new channel again.
The panel does not respond
Only the owner may change settings. If the owner is gone, a member in the channel can take over with Claim. The panel keeps working after a restart.
Empty channels stay around
Kage cleans up every 5 minutes and only treats freshly created channels as "empty" after about a minute.
