Audit Log: What Is Logged, Settings and Troubleshooting
How Kage's audit log works: deleted and edited messages, nickname and role changes in a log channel – with settings, limits and typical causes of errors.
Last checked for accuracy: 14 October 2026
The audit log records general server activity in a channel of your choice: deleted messages, edited messages and changes to nicknames or roles. It is independent of moderation actions: Kage reports *what* happened, not whether a moderator caused it. Deliberate moderation actions such as kick or ban belong in the mod log.
For a short walkthrough, see the guide Setting up the audit log.
Requirements
- Access to the module: You sign in to the dashboard with Discord and need the Manage Server permission (or access granted for this module).
- A log channel: Preferably a private channel that only the team sees.
- Kage's permissions in the log channel: Send Messages and Embed Links.
What is logged
The audit log has three categories. You switch each on or off individually (all are on by default once you activate the module):
| Category in the dashboard | When Kage posts an embed | Content of the embed |
|---|---|---|
| Deleted messages | A message is deleted | Author, channel, text (up to 1,000 characters) |
| Edited messages | A message's text changes | Author, channel, text before and after (up to 900 characters each) |
| Nickname/role changes | A member gets a different nickname or gains or loses roles | Member and the changes (nickname before and after, roles added and removed) |
Important limits:
- Bots are ignored: Messages from bots and changes to bot accounts do not appear.
- Only text changes count: If Discord merely loads a link preview without the text changing, there is no entry.
- Only cached messages: Kage sees deleted or edited messages only if it still has them in memory, which mainly means recently written ones. Very old messages or messages from before a restart do not appear.
- No name of the deleter: The embed shows the author, not who deleted the message. For that, use Discord's own audit log.
- Other changes are missing: Kage does not log usernames, avatars, channels or server settings here.
- Messages without text (for example just an image) appear with a placeholder instead of the text.
How to set it up
- Open Audit log in the dashboard and turn on Audit log active.
- Choose the Log channel.
- Under Categories, enable the types you want.
- Save. Without a chosen log channel, Kage posts nothing even if the module is on.
Settings at a glance
| Dashboard field | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Audit log active | Turns the module on | off |
| Log channel | Channel for the embeds | none |
| Deleted messages | Category on or off | on |
| Edited messages | Category on or off | on |
| Nickname/role changes | Category on or off | on |
Every entry additionally appears in the module's Logs tab and feeds into the Statistics. The audit log has no slash commands.
Checking the result
- Test with a second account: Write a message, edit it and delete it. In the log channel, one embed for the edit and one for the deletion should appear.
- Roles: Give the second account a role or change its nickname. An embed with the change appears.
- Logs tab: The events are listed there with their time.
Troubleshooting
Nothing appears in the log channel
Check that "Audit log active" is on, a log channel is chosen and saved, and the category is switched on. Check Kage's permissions in the channel. If the permission is missing, the error appears only in the operating log.
A deleted message is missing from the log
Kage probably no longer has it in memory (very old or written before a restart). Messages from bots are never logged either.
Edits do not appear
Only changes to the text count. Link previews loaded afterwards do not trigger an entry.
Role changes made by Kage itself show up
The audit log records every role change, including those by Kage modules such as auto roles or reaction roles. This is intended.
